Antonio Gramsci is one of the few Marxist theoreticians to have considered the role and nature of education, yet paradoxically his revolutionary, political and social theory seems at odds with his conservative approach to the content and processes of schooling. This book, originally published in 1979, examines his educational, political and cultural writings in an effort to resolve this apparent discrepancy. Gramsci's relevance lies in his treatment, in the context of his radical political theory, of themes which currently exercise modern radical educationists. Among the subjects he discusses are the sociology of the curriculum, the apparent discontinuity between the culture of school and that of daily life, problems of literacy and language in education, the role of the state in the provision of education, the cultivation of elites and the role of intellectuals, the relative functions of authority and spontaneity in education and the ambiguious relationship of these to differing political ideologies, particularly Fascism.

Ce travail est le fruit d'une recherche collective menée sous l'égide du CREDHO-Rouen et dont la conception a pris tournure à la fin de l'année 2002, alors que la Charte des droits fondamentaux de l'Union européenne avait été proclamée depuis deux ans et qu'elle commençait déjà à déployer certains effets. Au stade politique, les institutions de l'Union en ont fait immédiatement mention pour légitimer leurs actes, tandis qu'au stade judiciaire les requérants, les | défenseurs objectifs du droit | et certains juges l'ont utilisée pour défendre leurs droits mais également une certaine vision du droit. Dans ce contexte, évaluer le plus précisément possible l'apport de la Charte par rapport au droit français a semblé une entreprise intéressante. Pérennise-t-elle un statu quo, est-elle porteuse de régressions ou met-elle au contraire en scène moult plus-values eu égard aux droits garantis dans l'ordre juridique français ? Autant d'interrogations auxquelles les auteurs de la deuxième partie de cet ouvrage - intitulée la | Charte comparée | - ont apporté des éléments circonstanciés de réponse en se basant sur le texte de la Charte tel que proclamée en l'an 2000, seul texte qui fait aujourd'hui foi dans l'attente de la force contraignante du Traité signé à Rome le 29 octobre 2004. Bien que le temps de l'entrée en vigueur du Traité de Rome soit des plus incertaine, le lancement du | processus constitutionnel | et les travaux de la Convention sur l'Avenir de l'Union étaient cependant importants à décrypter afin d'évaluer le saut juridique que les conventionnels entendaient faire franchir à la Charte. Ce travail est le fruit d'une recherche collective menée sous l'égide du CREDHO-Rouen et dont la conception a pris tournure à la fin de l'année 2002, alors que la Charte des droits fondamentaux de l'Union européenne avait été proclamée depuis deux ans et qu'elle commençait déjà à déployer certains effets. Au stade politique, les institutions de l'Union en ont fait immédiatement mention pour légitimer leurs actes, tandis qu'au stade judiciaire les requérants, les | défenseurs objectifs du droit | et certains juges l'ont utilisée pour défendre leurs droits mais également une certaine vision du droit. Dans ce contexte, évaluer le plus précisément possible l'apport de la Charte par rapport au droit français a semblé une entreprise intéressante. Pérennise-t-elle un statu quo, est-elle porteuse de régressions ou met-elle au contraire en scène moult plus-values eu égard aux droits garantis dans l'ordre juridique français ? Autant d'interrogations auxquelles les auteurs de la deuxième partie de cet ouvrage - intitulée la | Charte comparée | - ont apporté des éléments circonstanciés de réponse en se basant sur le texte de la Charte tel que proclamée en l'an 2000, seul texte qui fait aujourd'hui foi dans l'attente de la force contraignante du Traité signé à Rome le 29 octobre 2004. Bien que le temps de l'entrée en vigueur du Traité de Rome soit des plus incertaine, le lancement du | processus constitutionnel | et les travaux de la Convention sur l'Avenir de l'Union étaient cependant importants à décrypter afin d'évaluer le saut juridique que les conventionnels entendaient faire franchir à la Charte. Ainsi, la première partie de l'ouvrage - intitulée | Charte évoquée | - présente les travaux des Conventionnels qui ont œuvré pour l'intégration de la Charte dans le Traité, comme l'activité des juges qui, pour certains, n'ont pas attendu qu'elle recouvre les habits de la force contraignante pour l'évoquer.
